ASTM A36 steel plate is a low-carbon structural steel plate manufactured in accordance with the ASTM A36 specifications for structural and fabrication use. It is available in plates and sheets of various thicknesses, which are used for parts that needs to be durable, reliable, weldable, and easy to machine. The low-carbon content in the material states that it can be cut, drilled, bent, and welded without complex manufacturing processes. ASTM A36 plates are used for structural frames, base plates, industrial platforms, storage equipment, construction projects, bridges, support structures, and other engineering applications that require moderate strength and good fabrication properties. They are also applied as a base material for equipment that is to be protected by other materials or surface treatment before service.
ASTM A36 steel plates are primarily composed of iron, with a maximum of 0.25-0.29% carbon, 0.80-1.20% manganese, 0.15-0.40% silicon, up to 0.04% phosphorus, up to 0.05% sulfur, and a minimum copper content of 0.20% when that is required to increase resistance to atmospheric corrosion. The material has a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa, tensile strength of 400-550 MPa, minimum elongation of 20-23%, and modulus of elasticity of about 200 GPa. Density is about 7.85 g/cm³, and the melting point is 1420°C to 1465°C. An ASTM A36 plate is usually manufactured by hot rolling and controlled cooling of the steel plate to achieve uniform mechanical properties. It has good weldability and good machinability, accepts thermal cutting without difficulty, and can be cold formed for many fabrication requirements. The mill scale surface is normally protected with paint, galvanising, or other coatings where corrosion exposure is expected.
