Refineries and boiler fabricators specify ASTM A387 Alloy Steel Gr 22 Cl.1 and Cl.2 Plates because the chromium-molybdenum composition holds tensile strength at elevated service temperatures, where plain carbon steel plate softens and creeps. Chromium between 1.88% and 2.62% builds oxidation resistance into the plate surface. Molybdenum, held between 0.85% and 1.15%, locks in strength above 450 degrees C. Class 2 plates deliver 75 to 100 ksi tensile strength against 60 to 85 ksi for Class 1. That gap lets fabricators pick between formability and higher-pressure service at the design stage. SA 387 GR 22 cl 1 and cl 2 Plates weld cleanly with standard preheat and post-weld heat treatment procedures, keeping fabrication costs predictable on large boiler drums and reactor shells. Power plants, refineries, and petrochemical units run this grade for components that stay in service for decades under sustained thermal cycling.
Class 1 plates are supplied in the annealed condition with tensile strength between 60 and 85 ksi. Class 2 plates are normalized and tempered to reach 75 to 100 ksi. Class 1 offers better formability for cold working, while Class 2 suits higher-pressure vessel walls where strength matters more than ductility.
Four benefits stand out: high-temperature tensile strength, resistance to oxidation and hydrogen attack, crack-free weldability and stable performance under repeated thermal cycling in boilers and reactors.
The UNS designation is K21590. This number covers both Class 1 and Class 2 conditions, since it identifies the chemical composition.
A dependable supplier tests each heat for chemical composition and mechanical properties. issues mill test certificates traceable to the cast number and stocks multiple thicknesses for immediate dispatch. Sourcing from such a supplier cuts lead time and lowers rejection risk on pressure vessel projects with fixed fabrication schedules.
